AwesomenessTV consumer iPhone app
This app makes it easy to discover and binge on AwesomenessTV videos. At the time, the only place you could watch our content was on YouTube. We built the app because our audience struggled to navigate our massive network of videos (6 million videos from over 100k channels + 30 shows on our main channel). Our strength was in our understanding of consumers between 13–18 years old. We believed we could create a more curated and engaging experience for our viewers if we had more control of the interface. For example, we launched an emoji-commenting feature on the video player. This is commonplace now on various livestreaming apps and Facebook video. However, at the time, we were the only ones doing it. We launched the feature and immediately our servers crashed because of engagement. We saw an average of 80 taps of the emojis per person per day. Consequently, this was producing millions of emoji taps and we had to refactor the whole thing to handle the scale.
Strategically, it was also very important because it allowed us to learn more about our consumers since YouTube limited access to this information. We moved a significant portion of our YouTube audience to this native iOS app.
My role in this app was as a co-designer, UX-researcher and product owner/manager.
AwesomenessTV is one of the most prolific studios in the digital space. We produce eight videos a day on the US YouTube channel, 100 hours a year on Verizon's Go90 and several shows on YouTube Red. We also create content locally in six foreign territories (United Kingdom, Spain, Germany, France, Canada and Brazil) and roughly five feature-length films a year. This is not a comprehensive list, but already indicates a significant and growing library.
